How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for about a year (on and off). What I mean by that is, I make sure to get my hair straightened every few months to make sure my hair is up on trimming but revert right back to my natural style after.
What made you decide to go natural?
I wanted a healthier route for my hair, so I looked into natural styles.
Did you do the big chop or did you transition?
I transitioned, with a little trimming.
What was the hardest part of going natural in the beginning?
The upkeep is ridiculous. Unless [you’re] born with curly hair, it’s hard maintaining a nice curl pattern.
Did you care what others would think about your hair? Do you still care?
Nope, not at all.
How did others react to your hair in the beginning? How do they react now?
Everyone loved it, and wanted to touch my hair all the time, aha.
Have you faced any struggles from being natural in school or in the workplace?
No struggles really, other than breaking a few combs here and there.
What is your current hair regimen?
Well, my daily regimen starts at night with my bantu knots and I make sure to moisturize and comb through any tangles I might have.
What products do you love?
I don’t have any particular product I love right now. I’m constantly switching them up to see what I like better. I do put natural lavender oil on my hair and anything that contains coconut and olive oil.
What is your favorite hairstyle?
Bantu Knot Out.
What is your hair motto?
More twirl, better curls.
What’s the best part about being natural? What is the hardest part?
The best part is knowing my hair isn’t getting damaged by heat. The hardest part is detangling and bantuing my hair every couple of nights.
What tips or advice would you give others that are starting their natural hair journey or thinking about starting?
Don’t give up! It’s a rewarding experience.
