For the past month I’ve been testing out the Humby Organics Shampoo bar & Conditioner bar for curly hair…actually for all hair types really. You may have seen my instagram post reviewing these products, but I feel like these two products deserve a detailed blog post, because I have a lot to say about these little bars.
These products were gifted to me in exchange for an honest review.
When the company reached out the me, I thought it would be a fun experiment to try their shampoo bar and conditioner bar on my very curly hair. Mainly because I would love to switch my everyday products to more sustainable options, but also because I have never seen someone who looks like me try a shampoo or conditioner bar. I’ve only seen women with my hair type, using creamy, thick conditioners – so that is what I’ve always to used. With this thought in mind, I was a little skeptical about how these bars would work for me. Basically, my hypothesis for this experiment was that the shampoo bar would work on my curly hair – because I’ve used something kind of similar in the past (i.e. African Black Soap) and the conditioner bar would not.
Okay, Let’s review the shampoo bar & conditioner bar for curly hair
SHAMPOO BAR ( ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ )
A little goes a long way with the shampoo bar because it lathers really well. It left my hair squeaky clean, which I hadn’t experienced in a while. From my research, shampoos with petroleum-based sulfates leave hair squeaky clean because they strip the hair of its natural oil. Unlike most sulfate shampoos, this product uses sulfates made from the fatty acid of coconut oil and the product also contains several other oils, so I wasn’t too concerned about the squeakiness of my hair.
CONDITIONER BAR ( ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ )
The conditioner bar took me by surprise. Like the shampoo bar, a little goes a long way. The thing that surprised me is that this product had really good slip. I was able to completely finger detangle my hair in the shower with no struggle – this rarely happens even with my favorite conditioners. I found that I had better results when I used this as a leave-in conditioner.
WORTH MENTIONING
- Both of these products smell amazing! I tried out Mango Breeze which smells like a tropical vacation. It’s basically a mix of citrus, vanilla, and coconut.
- The products are handmade with responsibly sourced ingredients
- Comes in compostable packaging with a sugarcane label
RESULTS
The shampoo bar & conditioner bar (when used as a leave-in) left curls soft, fluffy, & voluminous. When using these products, I did not apply any additional styling products. I simply washed, conditioned, then diffused. I had some frizz, but, overall, I am so happy with these products. They work wonders and are low-waste! Pretty much a win-win.

Would you ever use consider using a shampoo bar or conditioner bar?
Hi, I’m so glad someone with curly hair finally tried these bars. I’ve been meaning to switch to less plastic products but was concerned they wouldn’t work in my curly hair. After reading your post I’m excited to try them out and make the switch!
Yay! I’m glad you found this post. I was pleasantly surprised with the results! Would love to hear how these bars work for you.
Thank you so much fir your honest review! You answered all my curly questions I had when considering the switch to bars! I went to buy them, but your discount code didn’t work… did it expire?
Hi Anna,
I’m so happy I was able to answer all of your questions. Let me know what you think of the bar. Also, sorry there was a typo on the code. This code is TYLER15
Thank you for the info! I have been using a shampoo bar from a different company for my wavy hair and love it!! But was hesitant about switching my conditioner, until i saw your post. Mango sounds like a good start. lol
Would love to hear your thoughts if you try out the conditioner. I also was hestitant about the conditioner bar, but it provided great slip and worked really well. I hope you experience similar results.
I’ve never used shampoo or conditioner bars and would love to know a little about how to actually use them if possible! Also, we have pretty hard water – do you think that will be an issue? Thanks!
Ooo, yes. I’ll film a video to show how to use them. They work with hard water but if you’re worried, definitely look into buying a shower head with a filter. It makes a big difference.
Can the shampoo and conditioner be used on color treated hair? What about age-related thinning hair?
The website claims it works well for color treated hair but they say the blueberry is supposed to be good for mature, thinning hair.
I have used Humby for about a month on my color treated, thinning, frizzy hair. I am 68 years old. It has helped so much with the frizz. I absolutely love it.
I have some curly hair, but mostly wAvy frizzy hair & colored. Will these bars work for me. I hate frizz, but have learned, in almost 72 years to embrace it. I never know what my hair is going to look like.
I would suggest giving them a try! I thought they would cause frizz or not work for my hair, but I was very happy with the results.
I have been looking at Humby for a bit now. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try, as other products I have got online have not worked for me and my crazy curls. But based on your review, I am willing to give it a go. Thank You
I just found out about these shampoo bars… I have mixed curly hair that I’ve stopped dying and am embracing my gray. Honestly, I’m just too tired of dying and pressing my hair. I always research before any purchase. I’m really happy to have found your honest review, because not all curls, coils or textures are the same. My hair really gets frizzy and blows up… I just don’t like looking like witchy-poo.. Thank you!!
I hope these work well for you! 🙂 I agree, all curls are different.
You mention it works well as a leave in conditioner. Have you tried rinsing it out? How would you rate it after being rinsed?
I feel like I had more definition when I left it in. Rinsing it out made my hair soft, but I had to add more product afterwards to give it definition.
