For years I’ve been wanting to start an apartment balcony herb garden. Living in an apartment means there is limited space for starting a herb garden, but if you happen to have a balcony, that is the perfect place to start one. I planted this garden back in March, so if you’ve been following me on Instagram, you have seen the growth & struggles of my little herb garden.
How to Start a Balcony Herb Garden
1. Figure out what herbs to buy
Make a list of the herbs you eat most frequently. This will help you determine which herb seeds you should buy. The easiest way to grow an herb garden is probably by buying a kit. Opt for a kit that has the herbs you know you will eat a lot of.
2. Choose a planter
There are so many varieties of planters designed to fit on an apartment balcony. Go to Pinterest to help find inspiration for the type of planter you want.

3. Find a spot with good exposure to sunlight
Most herbs need at least 6 hours of sunlight, so be sure to pick a spot on your balcony where your herbs can get the most sunlight during the day. Turn your pot a quarter each day to make sure your herbs get sun on all sides.
4. Plant your seeds
Herbs thrive in potting soil with good drainage. Plant your seeds into the soil. Check soil regularly to make sure it is moist and doesn’t dry out.
5. Adjust accordingly
Keep a close watch on your plants. Your leaves may turn weird colors or start to wilt. If something strange happens to your plant, try to figure out how to fix it right away. Google will be your best friend when caring for plants.

What a great article! I actually have the same rail planter, and a friend gifted me the little starter pots months ago. I never thought of setting the potted seeds in the planter like that, but it makes a lot of sense…. just set the pots in it, then cover them with soil. I can’t wait ’til the spring comes to plant them. I’m a potted herb garden enthusiast. I grew over a half dozen different types this summer on my porch. Thanks so much for this blog post!
Wow! That’s so cool that you grew so many different plants on your porch. This planter is so great and fits so many different starter pots! And it looks really nice once the soil is added in.
